CITTRU - Bridging Business and Science – New chances for entrepreneurs and scientists
We would like to invite entrepreneurs and scientists from the Malopolska region who are active in areas of:
- Biotechnology/Health (BTech/Health)
- Environmental solutions (Env. Solutions)
- Information Communication Technology/New Materials and Technologies (ICT/NMT)
to participate in the GROW - Bridging Business and Science Project, which is co-realised by CITTRU.
The main goal of the Project is to create multidisciplinary networks that will build relationships between the Higher Education Institutions and business organisations located in five different European countries participating in the GROW Project: United Kingdom, Poland, Spain, Netherlands, and Italy.

CITTRU is financing new companies
Within the project "Become a successful entrepreneur", CITTRU has granted funds for 5 newly established companies. In order to obtain funds (17 000 PLN), candidates had to prepare a business plan and present it during special presentation.
All new entrepreneurs, in advance, had a chance to participate in trainings and individual consultations organised by CITTRU.
Studio Perspektywa - first prize for business concept of the CITTRU Summer School

The idea to establish company dealing with video-art was the best business proposition elaborated during the CITTRU Summer School - Jamna 2006. Among other ideas ranked top 3 were: the concept for a tourist agency with its offer individually fit to particular client's needs and innovative idea of the coffee drinking - sleeping place for people "tired during the workday".

Workshops of Innovativeness are in progress, Summer School is coming
Workshops of Innovativeness are organised by CITTRU. This is cycle of trainings for students, PhDs and graduates within the confines of project: 'Development of cooperation between the JU and business in the field of knowledge transfer'.
After the third series of workshops we can proudly claim, that this project arouses interest of students from 4th and 5th year of studies. Mr Wojciech Gede, project coordinator, says that more and more of young people have well-thought-out and studied projects. There are people, who are looking for information in legal or management domain.
CITTRU does the follow up and helps those participants who are taking the first steps in setting up their own business.
4th “University for Industry” conference
“Life Science Krakow”

4th University for Industry conference, “Life Science Krakow”, 6-7 April 2006.
The conference launched the concept of the development of a life science cluster in Krakow.
The idea of cluster is created by the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and its business wing - Centre for Innovation, Technology Transfer and University Development (CITTRU).
For the conference CITTRU was bringing together all sectors essential to the development of a life science/biotech cluster, including: representatives from the Polish government and the local authority, international companies operating in the pharmaceutical, medical and biotechnology sectors, private equity groups, legal and accountancy firms specialising in the life science sector, laboratory design and construction companies, as well as academics and researchers. With over 200 participants invited from across Europe one could have the opportunity to meet with leaders involved in all aspects of the commercialisation of research in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medicine.
CITTRU is a member of the PROTON Europe network.
CITTRU becomes a member of the Proton Europe network (Innovation from Public Research). It is an association of European centres dealing with the technology transfer between University's units and R&D units.
The aim of this network is to promote initiatives and foster the knowledge transfer and implement innovation in the whole EU.
Proton Europe was established within the 5th FP like as part of the Gate 2 Growth initiative.
The Academic Incubator of Entrepreneurship of the JU (AIP UJ)
The AIP UJ it is a new CITTRU's offer concerning Academic Entrepreneurship directed to students, graduates and PhD students in range of Academic Enterprise.
It is also worth mentioning that CITTRU's project was ranked 1st in the grant contest organised by the Ministry of Economy. Ranking list is available on the Ministry's website. Creation of the AIP , as well as organising trainings on how to set up own company, was possible thanks to the grant from the Ministry of Economy.
CITTRU joins the SCANBALT project
Scanbalt is a 6th FP's project coordinated by CIP (Center for Intellectual Property Studies), Chalmers University of Technology from Sweden. The partners are: CITTRU, Steinbeis Transfer Center Technology Management Northeast (STC) from Germany and Institute of Law, University of Tartu from Estonia. The main goal of the Scanbalt project is to create intellectual property network aimed at increasing competitiveness of the biotech sector, especially in Baltic and North Sea countries. It will include lawyers, (specialists in intellectual property), scientists, authorities and entrepreneurs.
All activities will strengthen the intellectual property rights in biotechnology, which will facilitate effective management of this rights and will positively influence R&D in Life Sciences.
Conference "University for entrepreneurship" - 1st Days of entrepreneurship - resume
14 October 2005 in Auditorium Maximum a conference called "University for entrepreneurship" took place. It was a final event of 1st Days of Entrepreneurship organised by JU.
During these days CITTRU's initiatives directed to students, PhD students and scientists were presented in all JU faculties. The intention was to encourage students to undertake entrepreneurial behaviour.
"Auditorium Maximum of JU" - 2nd stage of construction
The project was part-financed from ERDF (Polish - Integrated Operational Programme for Regional Development - ZPORR). It is the largest project of the JU, part-financed by EU funds. CITTRU is responsible for coordinating this project to meet all the EU requirements. The aim of the second stage of construction is to finish the works the and equip the lecture halls there in Krupnicza Street in Cracow.
It will be equipped with high-tech infrastructure which is adapted also for handicapped people and the highest quality audio-visual device.
The main hall with the capacity for 1200 people will be the biggest one in the Malopolska Voivodship (region).
The building was finished at the end of september 2005.
'Between the company and the University' - the CITTRU's public relations policy
The project of CITTRU's public relations policy, submitted at the end of 2004, was financed by the Sectoral Operational Programme "Increase of Companies Competitiveness" (SPO WKP). 
The project will last until mid 2006 and assume not only the increase of economic relations between science and business but also improvement of CITTRU's services. The most efficient way to realise these aims is to carry out informational campaign. embraces creating promotional materials, website development and internal promotion at the University.
The project is part-financed by UE, ERDF.
'Development of cooperation between the JU and business in the field of knowledge transfer'
This CITTRU project is based on an assumption, that the scientists are not sufficiently supported to reach business with their research results.
The project is part-financed from the European Social Fund. It lasts until the end of 2006 and includes arranging branch meetings, annual conference called "University for Industry", developing Innovative Database, creating base of companies offers directed to scientists and other actions which support exchanging information between business and science.
CITTRU initiates creation of the Jagiellonian Incubator and Technology Park - Life Science Park in Krakow
Life Science Park in Krakow is managed by the Jagiellonian Center of Innovation Ltd., created by the Jagiellonian University. The Jagiellonian University is the only owner of the JCI Ltd. - the idea of creating the company comes from CITTRU.
The Life-Science Park is managed by the Jagiellonian Center of Innovation Ltd. and is considered as the first project of that kind in Central Europe. Park is focused on development and implementation of bioproducts in cooperation with industrial sector.
The Project assumes creation of special infrastructure focused on explorations of Life-Science studies with the definite surface of about 10 000 m2 (gross).
Life-Science Park is basing its potential on the faculties of the University such as: Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biology and the faculties of the Collegium Medicum
The Project of Life Science assumes to create the highest quality infrastructure within Life Science, ready to fulfil the stipulations and expectations of the commercial clients
Branch meetings
A symposium called „Branch Meeting – Companies and University” took place on 14 July 2005.
Under the banner “Cosmeticus”, scientists from different JU’s faculties (e.g. of medicine, pharmacy, chemistry, biotechnology, physics, biology) and representatives of cosmetic companies discussed the possibilities of co-operation.
In the first part of this meeting, scientist’s presented research results and in the second part - representatives of cosmetic companies showed their achievements and research needs.
The main point of the meeting was discussion in working groups which resulted in some interesting initiatives.
“Cosmeticus” meeting is part of the project called ‘Development of cooperation between the JU and business in the field of technology transfer’. The project includes also developing a database of experts, projects, equipment, preparation of educational tracks for young scientists to become entrepreneurs in the future.
BEPART – workshops about education for entrepreneurship
On 9-10 June , The Centre for Innovation, Technology Transfer and University Development (CITTRU) organised workshops on creating efficient teaching programmes for entrepreneurship teachers – “Training of Trainers and Facilitators in Entrepreneurship Education and Training.”
The meeting took place within the BEPART project. Representatives of seven educational and business supporting institutions from 3 European countries took part in it.
Dr Jacek Klich from the JU’s Department of Management and Social Communication, was the special guest there.

3rd Conference "University for Industry - Innovation Highway"
This year edition (4.04.2005) of conference mainly concerns building cooperation between the education sector and entrepreneurship, through various tools based on supportive actions of European, national and regional authorities, higher education and diverse business institutions.
The speeches and discussions are focused on a complex perspective on such issues as: instruments promoting innovation policy of European, national and regional authorities, cooperation between universities and advanced technology centres. The conference exposes the way such actions are undertaken in the part of southern Poland that is alongside the highway A4 - so called highway of new technologies or innovation highway.
During the conference there were also the representatives of companies investing in new technologies present, as well as public - central and regional officials and representatives of the education sector.
Workshop: Innovative entrepreneurship, or how to turn innovation into business
Second time the Centre for Innovation, Technology Transfer and University Development organizes for 4th and 5th year students, PhD students and junior researchers of the Jagiellonian University the workshop on innovative entrepreneurship.
The main aim of the workshop is to demonstrate to the participants the ways to commercialize and patent their own ideas. Taking part in the workshop should encourage participants to start their own business. Workshop participants can also take part in the summer school led by business trainers and managers cooperating with the University. Participation in the workshop is free of charge.
Meeting with Jagiellonian University research and development faculty
Centre for Innovation, Technology Transfer and University Development organized meeting beetween scientists from Biotechnology department and Institute of Biotechnology, Sera and Vaccines BIOMED S.A.
Six sessions were conducted; including presentation of Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum and BIOMED S.A. Speeches and presentations had experts from Collegium Medicum (departments: pharmacy and medicine) and Biotechnology.
Innovative Database: experts, projects, equipment
Centre for Innovation, Technology Transfer and University Development (CITTRU) is organizing Database which provides an easy way to gather and search for information on: the possibility for expert co-operation with the scientific staff of the University, scientific projects realised at the University, specialised equipment available at the University.
The objective of the Database is facilitating contacts between the University and industrial and service-oriented businesses/companies interested in using the scientific potential of the Jagiellonian University.

Seminar "Research, Technology Transfer and Fund Raising at Purdue University"
On June 29th, 2004 CITTRU organized a seminar with the participation of guests from the University of Purdue, Indiana, USA. Prof. Robert Ringel, former Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Prof. Mirosław Skibniewski, Director of International Research Programs, gave a talk on "Research, Technology Transfer and Fund Raising at Purdue University: Implications for Polish Institutions of Higher Education".
The presentations and discussion concerned the functioning of the Research Park and the Discovery Park at Purdue University and the ways to raise funds for financing the activity of the University from non-public sources.
Creation of a company - the Jagiellonian Innovation Center
On June 24th, 2004 the Rector of the JU Prof. Franciszek Ziejka signed the notary act creating the company Jagiellonian Innovation Center.
The main aim of the Company, owned by the University, is raising funds for the creation of a technology incubator. The incubator will assist the development of entrepreneurship based on the University's scientific potential.
Modern technical infrastructure, low operating costs and professional services (a.o. legal and economic consultancy, access to laboratories and contact with scientific experts) will doubtlessly give the academic entrepreneurs from the incubator the possibility to successfully compete on the market of advanced technologies.
The Academic Science and Technology Centre AKCENT Małopolska
The Academic Science and Technology Centre AKCENT Małopolska was created to realize an interdisciplinary research and training programme lasting several years, as well as to effectively transfer and commercialize new technologies by Krakow universities: the Krakow Technical University, the Krakow Agricultural University, the Academy of Metallurgy and Mining and the Jagiellonian University. The consortium is coordinated by the Jagiellonian University represented by the CITTRU.
The research programme of AKCENT includes the following priorities:

4. Shaping and protection of the environment in the context of sustainable growth
5. Nanotechnologies, new construction and functional materials
